Happy Birthday to founder of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, James Bowdoin, born this day in 1726!

Bowdoin served in both branches of the Massachusetts General Court, served as president of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress’ executive council, elected president of the constitutional convention that drafted the Massachusetts’ constitution in 1779, and personally funded militia forces that were instrumental in putting down Shay’s Rebellion.

Along with his political activities, Bowdoin was a scientist prominent in physics and astronomy, and wrote several papers including one on electricity with his close friend, Benjamin Franklin.
