Happy ‘National Taffy Day’!

Taffy was originally called ‘treacle’ when it was first invented in the early 1800’s. It became widespread by 1840, as did the activity of taffy pulling. By the latter part of the century, taffy was a mainstay on the Atlantic City boardwalk – This is where the term salt water taffy was created.

The story goes that a shop owned by David Bradley was hit with high waves, and when a client requested a bag of taffy after the incident he jokingly referred to it as “salt water taffy”.
