Get the Memo? So Much More Than a Secretary
In 1952, Mary Barrett (President of the National Secretaries Association) and C. King Woodridge (President of Dictaphone Corporation) were addressing a national shortage of skilled office workers. With the assistance from a Public Relations executive and in an effort to generate a more positive image for the profession, they created the idea for a “National Secretaries Week”. The first “National Secretaries Week” was June 1–7, 1952, and the first “National Secretaries Day” was Wednesday, June 4, 1952.
At the time, being a ‘Secretary’ brought to mind the image of a woman sitting behind a desk; taking dictation and orders; and bringing coffee to ‘the big guy’ (who always appeared ungrateful for the effort).
Secretarial work is a professional position with a great potential for growth – integral to every business and its daily operation.
Secretary vs. Administrative Professional
Although many workers still hold the title of “Secretary”, the term in itself has pretty much been dropped in favor of a more comprehensive job title such as Administrative Professional; Administrative Assistant; Office Coordinator; Administrative Specialist; Executive Assistant; and/or Office Manager.
The International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) defines administrative professionals as ‘individuals who are responsible for administrative tasks and coordination of information in support of an office-related environment and who are dedicated to furthering their personal and professional growth in their chosen profession’.
Along with the name change, when we celebrate has changed. “Administrative Professionals Week” is celebrated the last full week of April, and the “Day” is always the Wednesday of that week. This year we celebrate Administrative Professionals Week April 24-28, 2017.
